They arrive every spring like a long-awaited letter — ranunculus, with their tissue-paper layers and colours that seem almost too beautiful to be real. Blush, coral, buttercream, deep burgundy. If you’ve ever stood in front of a bucket of them at a market and felt something close to joy, you are not alone.
But ranunculus have a reputation. They are an investment — in time, in money, in hope — and they can break your heart just as quickly as they steal it. A bent neck here. A snapped stem there. A bloom that droops before it ever fully opens. It happens, and it doesn’t have to.

After years of working with them in both arrangements and as a designer who has made every possible mistake, I’ve come to think of ranunculus as an honest flower rather than a fussy one. Treat them well, and they will reward you lavishly. Neglect the small details, and they will let you know.
Here are the two things that will change how you experience ranunculus this season.
Tip 01 — Support
Wire the stem
Ranunculus have soft, hollow stems and sometimes extraordinarily large blooms — a combination that can lead to bending and breakage. A simple wire threaded along the stem and gently up into the bloom provides the internal support it needs to stand tall. It’s a small gesture that makes a significant difference.
Tip 02 — Water
Less is more
Don’t drown them. Ranunculus only need a couple of inches of water in the vase — their soft stems actually perform better with less, not more. Think of them like gerbera daisies: a little water goes a long way, and too much can cause stem rot before the bloom ever reaches its peak.
Two tips. That’s really it. A wire for support, and a restrained hand with the water jug. Together, they address the most common reasons ranunculus disappoint — stem bend, breakage, and premature decline — and give you the best possible chance of watching those layered blooms open slowly and fully over the course of a week.
Spring is short. These flowers are here for a moment, and they deserve to be enjoyed properly. Now go find yourself a bunch.
